Looking for Work with a Criminal Record? Here’s the Difference Between Clean Slate, Pardons, and Expungements

Where to Start?

If you’re thinking about clearing your criminal record in Pennsylvania, chances are you’ve come across words like clean slate, expungement, and pardon. They all sound like ways to get a fresh start, but they don’t mean the same thing, and choosing the right one can make or break your chances at real change.

We’ve helped thousands of people figure out the best path forward. So let’s break down the difference between these record-clearing options and why, if what you need is a pardon, now is the time to start.

What Is Clean Slate?

Pennsylvania’s Clean Slate Law automatically seals certain non-violent misdemeanor and summary offenses — after a waiting period and only if certain conditions are met. The benefit? Those records are hidden from public view from certain employers or landlords. But sealed does not mean deleted and the government, law enforcement, and certain agencies can still access them.

Good for: Low-level offenses with no recent convictions
Not for: Felonies, more serious misdemeanors, or people trying to restore rights like gun ownership or professional licensing

What Is Expungement?

Expungement permanently erases a criminal charge or conviction from your record… as if it never happened. But here’s the catch: Pennsylvania law only allows expungement in very limited situations.

Good for: Very specific, limited cases
Not for: Felonies, most misdemeanors, or anything involving jail time without a pardon first

What Is a Pennsylvania Governor’s Pardon?

A pardon is official forgiveness from the Governor of Pennsylvania. Once granted, it allows you to expunge serious convictions—even felonies, DUI charges, or violent misdemeanors. It’s the only way to:

But there’s a catch: The pardon process now takes at least 3 years, and that’s on the fast track.

Job Searching with a Criminal Record (Real Talk and Smart Strategies!)

Looking for work when you have a record can feel frustrating, intimidating, and sometimes hopeless but we’re here to remind you that you are not alone, and it is absolutely possible!

Whether it’s been 6 months or 16 years since your conviction, here are some real-world tips and mindset shifts to help you move forward with confidence.

You Are More Than Your Past
  • You’re allowed to want more. Don’t let shame keep you stuck. Just because you’ve made mistakes doesn’t mean you don’t deserve a stable job, a good paycheck, and a fulfilling career.
  • Don’t hide, prepare. It’s natural to want to keep your record hidden, but it’s better to be ready. Knowing the exact charges on your record so you can answer confidently is very important. You don’t want to make the mistake of thinking you have a felony when you really have a misdemeanor!
  • One “yes” is all it takes. Most employers might say no but you don’t need most. You need one that sees your value and gives you a shot.
Practical Job Search Tips with a Record
  1. Know what shows up. Request your own criminal background check so you know exactly what employers will see.
  2. Apply to second chance employers. Use job boards that are friendly to people with records (like our Second Chance Employer List).
  3. Get your story straight. If your offense comes up, keep it short, own it, and focus on how you’ve changed. “That’s something from 2012 I’ve worked hard to move past. Since then, I’ve held steady jobs, completed a training program, and I’m proud of who I am today.”
  4. Build a resume that stands out. Highlight work ethic, skills, and any training, volunteering, or certifications. Even if they weren’t part of paid employment, your duties are still important and helpful skills!
  5. Practice interviews. Especially the tough parts. A friend, mentor, or local job support service can help you rehearse until you feel ready.

A criminal record may make it harder to prove your worth, but it doesn’t take away from it. You’re not just looking for work. You’re building a new chapter. And while the journey may feel slow or unfair at times, every step forward counts. We believe in second chances and we believe in you!

The Clock Is Ticking, And So Is the Anxiety 👀

Waiting three years can feel like a lifetime when you’re stuck in limbo. We talk to people every day who are scared they won’t get hired (or worse, get fired) because of something from their past.

Maybe it’s that DUI from college that’s still sitting on your record. Or a domestic dispute charge that never got fully resolved. Maybe it didn’t seem like a big deal at the time, but now, it’s holding you back from the life you’ve worked hard to build.

  • Applying for teaching positions
  • Getting a nursing license
  • Working for the government or in childcare
  • Passing a background check for a promotion or apartment

Even if it’s from 15 or 20 years ago, it still shows up and it still matters.

  • A form where you can request support like resume help, interview prep, or access to local educational programs

We’re doing this because clearing your record is just one piece of the puzzle and we want to help and encourage everyone to move forward with real opportunities.
